Sadly we won't be opening entries for the 2018 Dales Trail Series.

I know there'll be a lot of disappointed people out there; runners, marshals, sponsors, mini marshals, farmers, local businesses, Swaledale Mtn Rescue, NAV4, Yorkshire Dales National Park. So I can only apologise there won't be any DT's in 2018.

A special thanks to our amazing marshals who have, without a doubt, made the series super special. Huge thanks to our sponsors La Sportiva, not only do they make the best trail running shoes but they have been super generous and easy to work with.

We have met some of the most incredible people over the last 3 years, committed runners and generous helpers so thank you all for making the series what it was. It has been an incredible journey.

Our original mission was to show people some of our favourite running routes and to enable runners to build confidence over longer distances by organising a friendly but competitive series. The idea behind the series was that everyone got to know each other over the 3 races and meet like minded runners as the Grand Slam developed.

We'd like to think we achieved what we set out to do.

So for now, we're going to hang up our stop watches and fluorescent vests and put on our running shoes. Thanks to everyone involved, hopefully we'll see you out there in the hills in 2018.

PS. One person I always forget to thank but has contributed massively is our photographer Paul Taylor from Foxgrove Photography. He has captured the essence of the races and spirit of the runners time after a time...a talented photographer who has spent hours and hours on these events out in the field and post processing 1000's of images, all for the love of it. Thanks Paul!

Paul WalkerYou definently achieved your goal, I for one have loved these races having completed every race from the start. It has definently been about the people, fantastic scenery and brilliant organisation. I for one would be interested in doing a DT30 run weekend next summer if anyone is interested run around the route with a beery session at Usha Gap for afters!

John HusseySorry it's not on for 2018 but all the best to everyone involved. The DT20 last year was my introduction to Trail Running and I'm completely hooked. I'm still on a high for finishing Grand Slam-really not come down from a giddy level yet. Thanks to everyone including all the wonderful people I met, talked to and ran with-truly amazing bunch.

Paul TaylorIt's been an honour and a pleasure to do the photography for this series, I've loved every minute of it, made friends for life and got to know many of the runners over the three years. Hopefully I'll see some of you out there at other events; maybe running alongside you rather than in the viewfinder of my camera πŸ˜€

I've had a year off racing, welcoming our 3rd child so I didn't make it this year and was looking forward to doing the Grand Slam next year as a return. Fingers firmly crossed for 2019 or other races you host, will be watching. Best of luck x

Craig TiptonThanks for your efforts, ran the first series in full and loved it. Love your outlook on the series, its easy to drift into the 'same ol', but as you say, its all about giving people the tools and confidence to go their own way, find their own limits in the hills and explore different areas. Once again, its been a text book series, showing runners where they could be running and other/potential event organisers, how its done. Enjoy 'your' running now and the events you yourself have been waiting to take on. 😁

Alistair Paul FisherThanks for a fantastic series of three differing races that pushed a mediocre 47yr old road runner well outside his usual comfort zone of tarmac and 'easy trails'. IMPORTANT SAFETY INFO:

You should have received your race day info email a while back now but if you haven't all the info is copied below, reading it will help you πŸ˜‰

A few things.

1: We have a one way system in operation designed to get you to the start location. The roads around Semerwater are narrow, please follow the arrows from Bainbridge village green. Don't follow your Sat Nav!

2: Mandatory kit. Isn't optional, it's for your safety. Without it you won't be able to run.

3: Don't forget your ID. We need to be sure you are the person we have emergency contact details for. If anything happens we need to know who we are looking for! Unofficial transfer of numbers is not allowed, not only does it have safety implications it distorts the Grand Slam results. No ID no DT40.

4: Anyone seen smiling at the top of Wether Fell clearly hasn't been trying hard enough and will be made to complete another lap before they get their soup and medal.

------ RACE DAY INFO -----
Here is all the information you need to enjoy your day the DT40 in the Yorkshire Dales.

Parking

There will be off-road parking at Semer Water (Low Blean Farm, Semer Water, Bainbridge, DL8 3DJ) which is approached via Bainbridge in Wensleydale. In order to keep traffic flowing in the narrow lanes, it is very important that ALL vehicles follow the DT40 Race Traffic Signs and turn off at Bainbridge village green, rather than taking the turning just before Bainbridge. Please follow the signs, regardless of what your sat nav tells you for this last section. The car park will open at 08.00 and will be clearly signed, with marshals on-hand to direct parking. Please car share as much as possible as parking is limited at Semer Water.

Registration

Registration will take place from 8.30 to 9.30, at Race HQ on the beach at Semer Water. Collect your race numbers here. PLEASE NOTE: In line with many other races, we have decided to introduce Photo ID at registration to ensure that the right person is running on the right number. Unofficial transfer of numbers is a safety risk we cannot ignore and it is also unfair on every other runner as it distorts the results. You will not be able to collect your number without photo ID (any document/card with your name and photo on eg. driving licence).

Please remember to write your name, contact details and any medical information you think we need to know about, on the back of your race number

Start

The race will start at 10.00.

Please assemble at the start line on the beach at 9.50 for the pre-race safety briefing. There will also be a video count of runners prior to the start as part of our safety procedures.

Toilet Facilities

There will be portable toilets available for runners to use at Race HQ. Unfortunately there are no shower facilities available, but runners will be able to wash their legs or even go for a dip in the lake if they are hardy enough!

Mandatory and Recommended Clothing and Equipment

It is mandatory for you to carry a fully waterproof jacket with taped seams and a hood on this race. Runners will be asked to confirm that they have a waterproof jacket at Registration. Anyone without a waterproof jacket will not be able to take part in the race.

A cup/bottle is also mandatory. We decided to stop using plastic cups at the water stations for environmental reasons, so if you want a drink, bring a cup/bottle to fill up at water stations. (A bladder is also acceptable if you want to stop and top it up)

It is also mandatory to carry a map of the route. A map is easily downloadable from our website

Mandatory equipment must be carried at all times during the race and mandatory kit checks may be carried out prior to and at the end of the race

We also recommend that you wear and carry clothing that is appropriate to the weather on the day, the terrain and the distance. The route is very exposed in places and it will be colder on the hills than in the valley bottoms. Waterproof leggings, hat and gloves, compass and whistle are always recommended when running in the hills. The route is a mix of hard tracks, road and (possibly boggy) field paths, so choose a shoe suitable for this terrain.

Baggage

The car parking area is very close to the start line so it is likely that runners will be happy to leave gear in their cars. There is no secure baggage area at race HQ

Route and Marking

The DT40 is a 42 km marked route, using coloured tape to show changes of direction where necessary. There will be also be occasional β€˜reassurance markings’ on long stretches of trail and road. Marshals will be out on the route to point you in the right direction too, but don’t forget to look out for the markings, its still easy to go astray with a little lapse in concentration.

Although we make every effort to ensure that the route markings are in place prior to the race, there is always the risk that they can go missing, either accidentally or deliberately. Runners are therefore reminded that there is a printable map, a written route description and a GPX file available to download for each race

The route is slightly different to the recce route description as we have been fortunate enough to gain access to private land to avoid some road use. This will be clearly marshalled.

Water Stations

There will be water stations at three locations (8k, 19k and 28k), each offering water and additionally Elete isotonic drink at 19k and 28k . Don’t forget to bring your cup/bottle for use at the water stations. You may also want to carry some water on the route yourself. Snacks will also be provided; there will be sweets at 8k, homemade cakes and savouries at 19k and finally sweets and salted biscuits at 28k. Water will also be available at the finish line.

Cut-Offs

For everyone’s safety, we have decided to implement two cut-offs on the DT40. The cut-offs are based on a generous 7 hours completion time, which works out at 6km (or 3.75 miles) an hour. The first cut-off is at 19 kms at the Beckermonds Road End (at the checkpoint after the water station), at 3 hours 30 mins. The second cut-off is at 32 km at the Cam High Road End, (where it meets the Hawes-Oughtershaw Road), at 5 hours 30 mins. These cut offs should allow all runners to get through with time to spare, but If you get timed out please respect the decision, as it is for everyone’s safety (yours, sweepers, marshals etc).

Assistance

If you need help for any reason during the race, please speak to a marshal, or the Swaledale Mountain Rescue Team who will also be out on the route. If you find a runner who needs help, please be supportive and ensure a message gets to the nearest marshal

Retirement Procedure

Should you need to retire from the race, this can be done at any point where the route joins or crosses a road. You will need to wait with the marshal until the sweeper car arrives. It is essential that you report your retirement to the Race Director on return, to avoid a wasteful Mountain Rescue Team callout.

Refreshments

Prior to the race, hot drinks and cakes can be purchased by runners, family and friends.

Post-race, complimentary food and drink (soup, crusty bread, cakes, hot and cold drinks) will be provided by Nav4 for all runners by showing their race number. Runners are advised to bring a change of warm clothes/coats as there is limited cover at the hospitality area

Prize Giving

This will take place at Race HQ at approximately 15.00

Race Winners and Age Categories

There will be a prize for 1st, 2nd and 3rd male and female

There will be a prize for the first in each of the following Age Categories:

MV 40, MV50, MV60

FV40, FV50, FV60

Age categories are calculated on your age on 1st January 2017

Grand Slam prizes will also be awarded at the prize giving

Results

Following the race, results will be published on our website as soon as possible

Dogs

Sorry, no dogs are allowed on this race due to the route crossing the grouse moors

Spectators

Spectators can see runners at Deepdale Bridge (16km), Beckermonds (19km) and the Cam High Road End on the Hawes to Oughtershaw Road (32km) Please park considerately, take care on the narrow roads and respect the locals who need to go about their normal business

We look forward to seeing you on Saturday.

The GRAND SLAM trophies have arrived back from the stonemason, it can only mean one thing.....

The final race of the 2017 La Sportiva Dales Trail Series is this Saturday. It doesn't seem 5 minutes since the thunderstorm hit the DT20!

I hope training has gone to plan and you are you fit and ready to battle it out for the final race. Sorry you won't all be joining us, injuries have taken their toll this year and a few potential Grand Slammers won't pick up their medals. Make sure you come back stronger next year πŸ™‚

GOOD LUCK for the DT40 and remember it doesn't matter if you come 1st, 15th or 215th all that counts is you've been part of it.

I'm pretty certain you've loved seeing some remote corners of the Yorkshire Dales, we hope you've found it tough, we hope you've enjoyed competing and we hope you've met some great people.

See you on Saturday!

Dales Trail Series shared The Montane Lakeland 50 & 100's video.

The Montane Lakeland 50 & 100
Matt Neale is a Lakeland 100 legend, having been the only person to complete the course 9 times.

He's also the nice chap that gets up very early to run each DT course at the crack of dawn on race day. His job is checking the flags and route markings to make sure nobody gets lots. What a fella!

GOOD LUCK this weekend Matt, no doubt in a few hours you'll have finished 10!

Jamie McIlvennyI wish I saw this yesterday... I saw Matt several times in the Lakeland little festival village and would've thanked him (the DT40 mental scars have healed now! πŸ˜‚)

Carmen Dojahn-WoodOh my goodness! I didn't realise anyone did that for us - the DT runners. Thank you, Matt! Very well done also, on your Lakeland achievements! How amazing!
